On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the birth of Maulana Jalal-ud-Din Balkhi Rumi (1207-1273), an eminent Persian philosopher and mystical poet, the Permanent Missions of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Islamic Republic of Iran and Republic of Turkey, jointly organized a special commemoration ceremony on June 26, 2007 at the United Nations Headquarters.
Recognized as one of the greatest humanists of all times, Rumi advocated tolerance, mutual understanding, reason and access to knowledge through love. Therefore, in appreciation of his universal everlasting philosophy and paying tribute to his contributions to humanity, UNESCO has declared 2007 as the “Year of Maulana” to honor his heritage of peace
