Finding Your Writing Voice and Blog Love

Hand stitched by Marie @ Ancient Cloth

I am always touched by the kind words and generosity in the blogging world.
I ventured into it to fill a place in my heart. Prior to blogging, I was involved
in a full time commitment in New Zealand which I loved.  When it came time for us
to pack our bags and move on I had to let go and it was harder than I thought it would be.
I needed to talk about it and blogging seemed as good a place as any.

There were times when I wondered if I was talking to myself...if anybody
could relate to what I was saying. Why would anyone want to listen to a woman
talking about her life? I considered stopping, but then that first follower came along
and then a comment and I then I knew I had found my voice. Someone had thought
enough of what I said to lend encouragement, they understood. I was just as delighted
to receive that comment then as I am today.

Can I say, that if you are new to blogging and wondering if it is worth the effort
( as I did many a time) I encourage you to stay with it. I am sure many readers
who have been at it for a while would say the same. It takes time to connect.
Our writing voices are unique to us and I believe we should stay true to it. I once thought
of changing to be more like another and felt like I stepped into another skin...it wasn't me.
That is when I decided that numbers don't really matter..I just had to write and photograph
what I felt and hope that others would connect.  I soon realised that like minds
have a way of finding each other.

Why am I writing about this today? It all came home to me these past few weeks, literally.
On my door step, I have found the most wonderful messages and packages from readers.
Each unique to the sender, each greatly appreciated by the receiver (me).

With this post I am sending my sincerest thanks to Lisa in Vermont who sent me a wonderful
collection of her favourite things..which interestingly are mine too. Lisa and I connected several
months ago. We have been writing back and forth and discovered that we have much in common.
I have written about Lisa with A Dream House in Vermont, here and the Dance of the Virgins here. Today, after a good dig in the garden, I went off to read one of the books she sent me,
Two Gardeners.. A Friendship in Letters, more here.
I know someday, Lisa and I will meet, it is just meant to be :)

I am sending thanks also to Ilse of Insha'llah in Bahrain, another expat, who is currently
in transit to a destination unknown. She is a kindred spirit in that she
loves photography and travel. It has been a pleasure getting to know her and I hope
she comes back to the blogging world when she finally settles down again.

I send thanks to the very talented Marie of Ancient Cloth who responded
to my postcard request. I sent her one and she sent me three including
this beautiful hand made postcard that she made from vintage cloth.
She is a sweetheart! Please stop in and tell her I said so :)

I have Lisa to thank for introducing me to Joe at Notes from Juniper Hill Farm. If you are a keen gardener or even if you just like to play in the garden, like me, you should stop in
and say hello to Joe. I promise you will be glad you did. Joe has a fantastic blog which
he recently created over a long and cold winter.  Joe sent me an issue of New Hampshire Home magazine with a feature article on his wonderful farm. I was delighted to receive it and have since
scrutinized properties around New Hampshire to see if a gem like it exists elsewhere.
Mr. H has been hearing about nothing else since :)

Beate @ Sunday in Bed is another talented craftswoman and a cherished blogging friend.
I have admired her knitted creations for sometime and purchased a blanket from her
DaWanda shop which I adore. We are now talking about creating a 'summer wrap' and
I have no doubt that I will be selecting another of her items in the future.
My pick.... in the center 'A'. I can't wait!

I would be remiss in not mentioning those times, when you least expect it,
you receive a message asking if you would like to meet. It has happened twice to me
and in both cases there was not the least amount of hesitation. I had the great pleasure
in the past months to meet Pamela @ From The House of Edward who I wrote about here.
I feel very fortunate to count her amongst my blogging friends. Not only is she a fabulously
talented woman, she is also sweet and kind and generous and she has Edward,
the greatest friend one could have.

Lastly, my blogging story came full circle when I recently met Vicki @ French Essence. For those of you who know Vicki's books and blog, can I just say that she is an absolute delight in person. Smart, gorgeous, stylish, friendly and warm hearted are just a few of the words to describe her. She is a treasure!

If it were not for Vicki, I would not be blogging today. I happened upon her book, My French Life,
in our local library in Auckland, New Zealand around the time we were ready to move in 2009.
I read the first page, first sentence and was delighted to see that someone else felt the way that I did.
I was not alone. I looked up her blog on the internet, followed along for a while and when the time
was right, I created Collage of Life. I wrote about her here. Vicky wrote to lend encouragement
and that made all the difference to me. I have been following her blog ever since.... to have met
her was truly the icing on the cake ;)

More on Vicki and her books, here.

If you are new to blogging, take heart, stay with it,
go around and find others whose writing voice calls out to you.
Talk to them, leave a comment and persevere.
When you do, it will come back to you :)

and one last time
Thank you to one and all !!

Dancing, Blog Love and a Recipe

Are you familiar with the 'Dance of the Virgins'?
I wasn't and when my blogging friend, Lisa, mentioned it in one of her letters
I had to know more.  Lisa and I are both Virgo's, writing every now and again about this and that.
When she mentioned a special house in Vermont, I was enchanted and wrote about it here.  When she mentioned 'Dance of the Virgins',  I just couldn't resist. I had all sorts of visions running thru my head and I needed an explanation. Lisa was happy to oblige. I also asked her to spread a little Blog Love
to a few of her favourite blogs. Lisa is blogless in Vermont (I am hoping she will start one)
but an avid reader :) I count myself  one of the lucky ones!

Dance of the Virgins
Lisa's "Dance of the Virgins" remembrance:
"We met through work at the Real Estate office I was managing.  First Sandi and Holly and then Ginette.  All Virgos, we were connected by a shared aesthetic, work ethic, warped sense of humor and varying degrees of fussiness. Our birthdays range from late August through late September, two of them on the cusp and two of us only a day apart.  We loved each others houses, but decided upon Holly's rambling farmhouse for the annual celebration, the "Dance of the Virgins".  Held in September,  we would have a potluck feast spread on her antique harvest table, filling our plates with treats such as Lavender Scones, or a dense and sinful Chocolate Loaf with Raspberries. Holly giggles (which she does the best!) when she remember serving Mimosas, but making tea for Sandi and I. There was no dancing, we were all past being virgins in any sense of the word and it wasn't just for the four of us.  We were aware of needing a token Sagittarius (Lori) or Aquarius (Michaela) to keep it light and fun.  We did this for years until it grew beyond birthdays into a monthly "girl's night out" celebration with a fair portion of the zodiac present at a local restaurant.  There is no doubt that if Jeanne were to move back to the States, we would have to resurrect the tradition. She's "one of us" as well!  I would have to include my other two dear friends, Hilda and Cheryl.  Both are Geminis, with birthdays a day apart. There are few in life who become your "cup of tea" friends, the ones who nurture your soul.  How do you celebrate each other?"
I can tell you right now, I am tempted to create a 'Dance of the Virgins' extravaganza!
I have visions of the spirited ladies in the movie Ya Ya's of the Sisterhood
around the table with lots of laughter. It would be the very best way to celebrate each other.

I must say...
I feel a most definite Ya Ya moment coming on!
Some serious head dress envy is going on right now :)

It would be magic to create a 'Dance of the Virgins'
with friends, don't you think? I hope this inspires you :)

By this point, you may be wondering who Lisa is....
Here she is with Scottish singer-songwriter, Al Stewart...another Virgo.

Lisa and Al Stewart
She writes....
And to carry on the Virgo theme, I've attached a photo of myself with fellow Virgo, Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat" fame).  This was taken at my home after a concert I had produced for the The Old Meeting House in Francestown, NH.  A clip of that concert can be found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btv0BZdQYNw
Featured in this video is my former neighbor, Matt Savage.  Matt is autistic, but his passion for music has rewarded him with an early pass to Berklee School of Music as well as his own jazz trio, television appearances and CD's. At my request, I had asked Matt's mom if he would accompany Al on one of my favorite songs, "The Year of the Cat".  Perhaps on 12 yrs. old at the time, he never rehearsed with Al Stewart, who showed up 15 minutes before showtime. They had no idea what to expect.   To this day, I laugh through my tears as Matt repeatedly tinkles the piano keyat the end, to show us it is out of tune!!
 Hugs,
Lisa

Lisa's 'Blog Love' list....
(Our company facebook page is blessed to have to insightful,
creative writing of Paschal MacMurray
who reminds us of our connection to others):
(aka Holly's blog!):
(Deirdre & Caleb are Vermont authors &
restaurant owners who write about food, passions and travel):
(I see a "cottage theme" in blog love here!)
I love Janet's classic style!:

 lastly...
Oh...PS, feel free to share the Lemon Bread recipe.
I had the pleasure of sharing this recipe when I went for tea
and a visit to another Virgo your readers may know...
the late Vermont author and illustrator Tasha Tudor.
Another story for another time!

Lisa's Luscious Lemon Loaf

Ingredients:
6 Tbsp. Butter, Softened
1 Cup Sugar
2 Eggs
½ Cup Milk
1 ½ Cup All Purpose Flour
1 Tsp. Baking Powder
Freshly Grated Zest of 1 Lemon
Lemon Glaze: ½ Cup Sugar (or more)
Juice of 1 Fresh Lemon
Instructions:
.  Melt butter in small pan  -  add to 1 Cup Sugar
.  Add eggs, lemon zest and mix
.  Stir in flour, baking powder, milk
.  Pour into greased and floured loaf pan
.  Bake 1 hour in preheated 350 degree oven (I put stove timer on for
50 minutes and start testing for doneness with a toothpick)
.  When done, remove from oven and lightly poke holes on top with a fork.
Spoon lemon glaze over top and put back in oven for another 5 minutes.
.  Cool…Can be frozen for a month or two, or eaten right away!

Many thanks to Lisa for sharing her stories, spreading a little 'Blog Love' and providing us with this luscious lemon loaf recipe. Such a small world we live in. When you come to think of it....wouldn't it be fun to have our own Blogging Dance of the Virgins??? I think we should start by creating our own head dress and posting on it!! What say you?

I leave you on that note with a little movie clip
from Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend...
may it be filled with joy :)

A BW Happy Drinker in the Dew thinking about Blog Love

To bw or not to bw?
Ask a blogger a questions and you most certainly will get an answer!
Thank you all for helping me with my dilemma. It was very close but it appears
the majority of you like the Happy Drinker photos thrown in with Black and White.
Very interesting! I have decided to mix it all up and spread them out between the five blogs.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it :)

How does thee garden grow?
I read a review on a great book, The Morville Year, here.
There was something in "the smell of freshly cut mowed lawn and
walking in the dew in a dressing gown" that hooked me.
I am getting that Spring feeling, how about you?

Blog Love comforteth like sunshine after rain...
I want to send out some Blog Love today.
Some of you may have read my last Blog Love post here.
If not, sending Blog Love is a way of saying...I love your blog
and thank you for inspiring me. My last post was to thank those that started
with me from the very beginning and are still with me today. I want to thank
them for passing it on and sharing in the Blog Love :)

Today I want to thank more faithful followers whose blogs and comments
I thoroughly enjoy. They have been checking in on me for a while now and
in some cases they follow several of my blogs. They are true friends and genuine
people who I think you will enjoy getting to know. I am passsing on Blog Love
to these lovely ladies to say, I appreciate your friendship and love your blog!

To the recipients: I am changing this a bit. You can pass Blog Love to whomever
you like in any way that you like. I started this with the idea of having everyone post
their very first post when they passed it on. You can make your own rules.
If you wish to just bask in the love and not pass it on, that is ok too!

Anyone can grab the button...spread the Blog Love far and wide!
I'll be back with more Blog Love soon :)
Have a great day !

BLOG LOVE~ Pass It On

I am sending on a little Blog Love today.
It is a way of saying...I love your blog
and to thank you for inspiring me.

I plan to spread a lot of love in the upcoming weeks.
Today, I would like to start with the ladies who have been
with me from the very beginning and are still with me today.
I have designed this to be as easy as possible ( I hope)
I only ask two things...
1. Provide the photo and link to your very first post.
2. Share the love and pass it on to whomever you like.

Why the first post?
It is when you took your first step and if you hadn't
we would not be reading your words now.
Passing on Blog Love is to let others know
that we appreciate their friendship
and that we love their blog.

I will start...
MY FIRST POST
My first post: 24 October 2009
Title: Collage of Life
Link: here

PASSING IT ON
These lovely ladies saw me thru the move from New Zealand to England.
Read about the trials and tribulations...good posts and bad.
I am so happy that we are still friends today.
They are an inspiring group of women and for that I am thankful.
I encourage you to go along and say hello...they are inspiring!

To all these ladies...I love your Blog and
send my sincerest thanks for hanging in there with me
from the very beginning.
To the recipients of Blog Love:
This Award is a little different.
If you wish to just bask in the love and not
pass it on, that is ok too! We all lead
busy lives and can only do so much.
Just want you to know that your
blog is loved!

There are many more blogs to talk about!
I will be back for more Blog Love.
In the meantime, if you want to spread your own Blog Love,
just grab the button and pass it on!

Wishing one and all a wonderful weekend.
May you spend it surrounded by the ones you love.
I will leave you with a song to carry you on your way...
